Invocation:

selected verses from Genesis Chapter 1:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
God said "Let there be light" and there was light.
And God said "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water". So God made the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.
And God said "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear". And it was so.
Then God said "Let the land produce vegetation: seed bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it according to their various kinds". And it was so.
And God said "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night and let them serve to mark the seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth". And it was so.
God said "Let the waters team with living creatures, and let birds fly across the expanse of the sky". So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems according to their kinds and every winged bird according to its kind.
And God saw that it was good.
And God said "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground and wild animals each according to its kind". And it was so.
Then God said "Let us make man in our own image in our likeness. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God he created him: male and female He created them.
Then God said "I give you every seed bearing pant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground. Everything that has the breath of life in it, I give every green plant for food". And it was so.
God saw all that He had made and it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning the sixth day.

Hymn 268: Jesus is Lord! Creation's voice proclaims it.

tune: Jesus is Lord, with Intro.

1. Jesus is Lord! Creation's voice proclaims it,
for by his power each tree and flower was planned and made.
Jesus is Lord! The universe declares it -
Sun, moon and stars in heaven cry Jesus is Lord!

Chorus:
Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord!
Praise him with alleluias for
Jesus is Lord!

2. Jesus is Lord! Yet from his throne eternal
in flesh he came to die in pain on Calvary's tree.
Jesus is Lord! From him all life proceeding,
he gave his life a ransom thus setting us free.

Chorus

3. Jesus is Lord! O'er sin the mighty conqueror,
from death he rose and all his foes shall own his name.
Jesus is Lord! God sends his Holy Spirit
showing by works of power that Jesus is Lord

Chorus

PRAYER

(First a few moments of silent reflection)
O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him Christ the Lord. Our Saviour of Bethlehem and Calvary we join with all the company heaven to offer our worship, praise and adoration.
We are reminded that You are King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Omnipotent reigning over all the earth and yet you have invited us into Your most Holy presence for which we give you our love and gratitude. In the busy schedule of the fast-paced life of the present age it is so good for us, for the short time we spend together, to be lost in wonder love and praise.
Please take from us all that would hinder the blessing that comes from meeting with You and enrich our lives and encourage our faith through the fellowship that we now share together. Lord, we give You all the glory knowing that you are the God of all creation and that all the beauty we see around us is a gift from You.
We are constantly amazed at the cycle of life, the seasons which come and go and how you bring light out of darkness and new life out of what seems to be impossible. The snowdrops and crocus remind us that winter is passing, spring is in the air and once again Your faithfulness has been revealed for which we are so grateful.
The inadequacy of our words in expressing our appreciation for all that You have done for us, continue to do for us and all that you mean to us is a source of concern but the fact that You are able to see beyond our words into the depths of our hearts gives us confidence in our continuing walk of faith with You. There is none other who is able to give what You give and do what You do and we are humbled by Your greatness and Your glory. Lord, we give you all the Glory.
We recognise that You are perfect, holy and worthy but despite our best intentions we fall short of Your standards. Forgive us, we pray, for the times when we have been wayward, slow to respond to the promptings of Your Spirit and even disobedient to Your will and ways.
By Your grace help us to overcome the temptations that lead us away from You and into areas of thought word and deed which are unworthy of our professions of faith and grant us the courage to be all that You want us to be, doing all that You want us to do.
Thank you, Lord, that through the death of Christ upon the cross our forgiveness is secure and help us to continue to share in this act of worship with pure hearts and minds. May Your Holy Spirit lead and guide us in all that we share together as we offer this our prayer in and through the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour and our Lord.

The Lord's prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen

Reading: Mark 9: 14 – 29

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 "What are you arguing with them about?" he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not."

unbelief

19 "You unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, "How long has he been like this?"

"From childhood," he answered. 22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."

23 "‘If you can!" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for one who believes."

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's dead." 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn’t we drive it out?"

29 He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."

Hymn 117: O Lord my God when I in awesome wonder

tune: How great Thou art, with Intro.

1. O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Chorus:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

2. When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;

Chorus

3. And when I think that God His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die-I scarce can take it in.
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:

Chorus

4. When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home-what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

Chorus

unbelief

Sermon

The man in our reading from Mark's gospel said to Jesus "I believe help thou my unbelief" and the Apostles Creed begins, "I believe in God the father almighty creator of heaven and earth" and this morning I am making a faith statement of my own.

I believe that nothing is impossible to God. My confidence for making such a bold statement comes from what I see around me, what I have read in my bible and personal experiences whilst seeking to live a life of faith. I totally believe that creation in all its splendour, majesty and wonder emanates from God. Now I do not pretend to have the scientific knowledge or astronomical experience to explain the amazing universe of which we are a part, a solar system which is only a tiny part of our galaxy which in itself is only a tiny fraction of our own universe and the mind boggles.

"How did God do it?" is a fair question to ask. I don't have a clue how to fully answer that and another perfectly valid question of who made God in the first place does not prompt a ready response except, perhaps to venture into the words of Julie Andrews: "Let's start at the very beginning it's a very good place to start when we read we begin with A,B,C and when we sing we begin with Do Re Me" which takes us to Genesis chapter1 verse 1 "In the beginning God".

You have to start somewhere and what better place than with God. If the story of creation was all we had to go on it would be understandable that there could be a measure of scepticism. However, in John chapter 1 we are told that "in the beginning was the word (that is Jesus), that this word was with God, indeed was God and with God in the beginning, through Him all things were made and without Him nothing was made". John goes on to say that this word, so involved in creation, then became flesh and dwelt among us. Charles Wesley went on to describe it as, our God contracted to a span incomprehensibly made man.

If we cannot accept such amazing claims it begs the question of who and what is the capability of the God whom we are here to worship. If we are to limit God to human understanding when we are unable to grasp the enormity of the universe we are left with a God of limited value.

J.B. Philips wrote a book under the title 'Your God is too Small' and I rather think that he is not far wrong in his perception of where many, if not most Christians stand in relation to their understanding of the God of the Bible. He is the God who inspired remarkable people of character and courage such as Abraham, Moses, Ruth, Noah and many more to fulfil his purposes. He sent plagues at will, parted the Red Sea at the appropriate time in order to assist the escape of his chosen people from the burdens of their service in Egypt. He gave wealth and wisdom to Solomon, strength to Samson and Psalms of hope to David even though he was a man of human weakness and frailty. This same God appointed prophets who were able to foretell the future with tremendous accuracy all of which can be verified from our bibles and historical records. Venture into the New Testament and we have water changed into wine, blind people made to see, lame people made to walk and even before Jesus himself experienced resurrection, Lazarus and the daughter of Jairus were raised from the dead. Is ours a God who is in any way limited by what he can do? I don't think so.

We all have a story to tell about God's involvement in the events of our lives influenced by Him. If not, Christians should have. The transformation that becoming a Christian made, the decisions that would have been to the detriment of ourselves that He has led us to change, answers to prayers that sometimes we have forgotten that we have prayed and the lives that have been touched and blessings we have given and received because God is able to do far more abundantly than we dare to ask or think.

Some may think that it is naive of me to believe that nothing is impossible to God but you can only speak as you find and my awareness of this most remarkable and beautiful world, confidence in the integrity of the scriptures and personal experiences of God in my own life lead me to conclude that it is absolutely true. However, in the light of this affirmation people are entitled to ask the question, if that is the case why does God not stop bad things happening, which is a perfectly legitimate challenge to make and one that I cannot fully explain or answer.

What I would say is that although there are things which He could do there are some things which He will not do. In order to appreciate this we need to recognise that from the beginning of time and creation of human life God gave a special gift to every person he ever created. In the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve were forbidden to do only one thing which they could not resist doing and without any regard to the consequences of their disobedience and future events that would eventually demonstrate the cost of their actions.

When you, I and all people throughout the ages were created the precious gift entrusted to each and every one of us is the gift of freedom of will. We are free to make our own choices and it is my belief that under no circumstances will God interfere with this. If He, as He is able, was to make us do what he wants us to do we become robots to His will and we are longer free. What kind of love is a love that comes from compulsion rather than that which is freely given? Even in human terms when we are compelled to do something the value is diminished. Christianity is about liberty and you become a Christian by choice and not compulsion. Jesus Himself said that through Him we would know the truth and the truth would make us free. (John 8 vs.34).

With freedom comes responsibility and accountability which many seem to ignore but God doesn't. What is expected of us has been made clear and when we were created in His image it was for a purpose. He wants us to worship Him, to live in fellowship with Him and to serve Him by serving others. God could compel us to do all of these things but He doesn't. We are free to choose whether or not we believe in Him, surrender our lives to Him or to fulfil His calling to serve. What is quite remarkable is that no matter which choice we make, His love for us is no more or less than it has always been. His love does not differentiate between those who choose to follow Him and those who don't. God is not given to favouritism and no matter how hard we work for His Kingdom we will not benefit more from His favour than we do now. He could treat us all differently but the fact is that He doesn't and treats believer and non-believer just the same.

One other thing that God will not do is to automatically forgive sin, because to do so would be to negate the sacrifice of Christ upon the cross of Calvary. It is the cross which is central to all He stands for. Love which is sacrificial and boundless revealed in a way which is beyond our human understanding and He did it for me as He did it for you but what it also highlights is forgiveness. Jesus on His death did not just die for our sins but He took upon Himself our sins. It was a costly price to pay and as I say He did it for you as He did it for me. Forgiveness is not an automatic entitlement because we also have a price to pay in a different sense. Forgiveness comes through repentance and confession.

There has to be recognition and acknowledgement of our imperfections as it tells us in 1 John 1vs8, if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us but if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The only thing that can separate anyone from God is sin. He Himself has provided the way of access into His presence and He could, but will not, allow deviation from the requirement to repent and confess our sins if we are to enjoy the relationship with Him that He wants us to have. If we are unsure of what sins we have committed we need to seek God's guidance for clarification in order to get them dealt with and forgotten. It may even involve action to right wrongs that we may have committed against God and others but whatever it takes it will be worth it. The prayer that Jesus taught His disciples necessitated a forgiving spirit if we are to receive forgiveness, and forgiving others is certainly not always easy to do.

God will not compromise on the standards He has set. He could but He won't and we are left with a situation that puts the onus of responsibility on humankind to fulfil His requirements or to suffer the consequences. There are those who would encourage us to believe that His standards are too high and that it is acceptable to establish our own but that is not how God works. If we want to profess a Christian faith of integrity it will have to be on God's terms and not our own, which leads me to what I said at the beginning and that it is my belief that there is nothing, absolutely nothing that God cannot do but there are some things that He will not do. Any compromise will have to come from us and we each have to come to a personal decision of whether or not we are prepared to make it.

Joshua asked the question "Choose you this day whom you will serve" which is a very good question deserving of an honest answer. Being a follower of Christ is demanding, challenging, and takes a great deal of faith. There is nothing wrong with saying to The Lord, I believe help thou my unbelief, as we seek to walk with Him and may we have the grace to do so as His Spirit moves in our hearts.

Amen

Prayers of Intercession

Father, we thank You for Your generous love, faithfulness and our belief that what You promise You will always do. Help us to be patient as we await answers to our prayers, open to Your guidance and prompting on how and for what we should pray and mindful of the need to give thanks when you have worked your purposes out.

We are blessed by the evidence of new life springing up around us and encouraged to know that You have not abandoned Your control over this world and all that You have created despite the many concerns that we have for what we see and hear.

Flag of Ukraine

Our greatest concern at the present time is for the situation in Ukraine and our hearts reach out to the people of that nation asking for Your protection and blessing on all whose lives are endangered by the actions of the Russian army.

We pray particularly for the children living in fear and for those who have been orphaned or separated from parents as a result of the war. Father, as the international community considers how best to respond, please give wisdom and discernment to governments and politicians, that decisions may not be hasty to the long-term detriment of the world in which we live.

At times like this we find it difficult to fully comprehend the love that You have for all Your children, including those who seem to have no regard for the sanctity of life.

We pray that President Putin will be thwarted in the pursuit of his aims and that the people of Russia will be convicted to challenge the death and destruction which is being pursued at this time. Lord, the world to which to a great extent denies You, is in desperate need of Your intervention and we pray that You will show mercy and act with compassion in order to bring an end to this world threatening conflict.

There are other areas of the world in which many of Your precious children are constantly subjected to violence and the threat of war Lord, and we pray that You will bring peace, healing and reconciliation with people learning to live together in mutual respect and harmony. We ask for Your blessing and protection upon the young, the old and the vulnerable that they will know the comfort of Your presence and the assurance of Your love. We pray for our own families and friends, especially any who do not know You as their Saviour and Lord, asking that they will be open minded and responsive to the witness that we share with them and ask that You will give to each one of us sensitivity in the manner in which we share Jesus with others.

We pray for a special blessing on this our Church family and particularly for any who are ill or in need that they will sense our prayerful concern and be reassured by Your Holy Spirit of Your abiding love for them.

We ask for Your blessing on the congregation here at Elm Ridge and give thanks for their kindness in providing the temporary accommodation that is needed. Relieve us of any anxiety about the future and Lord help us to trust in You to fulfil Your will and purposes whatever financial challenges we may have to face.

Please hear and answer all our prayers, offered in and through the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Hymn 289: To God be the Glory

tune: To God be the glory, with Intro.

1. To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
Who yielded his life in atonement for sin,
Who opened the life-gate that all may go in:

Chorus:
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son;
And give him the glory-great things he has done!

2. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God!
And every offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives:

Chorus

3. Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
The wonder, the beauty, when Jesus we see:
